Slocialite.com's top picks for San Luis Obispo hotels:

Apple Farm Inn: A charming Victorian-style hotel with a restaurant, bakery, spa and visually appealing millhouse, this San Luis Obispo establishment offers luxury lodging in San Luis Obispo. In fact, actress Lindsay Lohan and her entourage stayed at the Apple Farm when she was in town to film her horror flick "I Know Who Killed Me." Look for fireplaces and hot tubs in some of the rooms.

Embassy Suites San Luis Obispo: It's your usual, reliable chain establishment, but the spacious suites and the atmosphere of the spectacularly large atrium make this a luxurious place to stay. It's near a big retail center, too, so staying at the Embassy Suites makes it easy to go out and be seen doing some shopping and dining.

If you're in the mood for tacky...

Of course, everyone mentions the supposedly "world-famous" Madonna Inn when discussion turns to the topic of San Luis Obispo hotels. However, with its swaths of pink befitting a Barbie-toting 11-year-old girl's bedroom and guest rooms "themed" to cavemen, the jungle, and Western pioneers, there is probably more, er, tackiness per square inch in this establishment than anywhere else.

The Madonna Inn is the kitsch capital of the world, parading as a European-themed resort. People with taste do not stay there. Only clueless tourists who think passe boom-boom rooms that would be better suited for one of P. Diddy's oversized mansions would stay at this tribute to trashtastic taste. Stop by only to marvel at the oft-discussed waterfall urinal in the basement restroom - only to say you've seen it, of course - and maybe try out one of their delicious multilayer cakes, but really, there are bigger and better things to do in San Luis Obispo.
